In my work, the materials and processes I use reflect or shape the concept. My self portrait series, a group of self portraits about change and transformation, was done in gouache on canvas, a combination which lends itself easily to constant change and which is even in the final state impermanent. My acrylic series takes advantage of both the sculptural potential of acrylic and the illustrative characteristic of paint to create pieces which talk about texture and pattern and the contrast of image with sculpture. My ceramics are inspired by the language of clay in archaeology and speak about decay. My fabric series exploits the fabric elements to talk about fabric itself and how it is a very strong communicator of memory.
Common in my work in all mediums is a sense of nostalgia, memory, decay, and change. I am inspired by things of the past, methods of transformation and by patterns of decay. I like old pictures that have faded and torn, old magazine covers with outgrown products. I remember rust patterns on old buildings, knots in old trees and cigarette burn patterns on bus stop walls. These beautiful motifs of trivial things direct my work and together create a sort of dialog of fragmented memories and potential imagery from which one can create their own stories. The potential of the mind to complete the picture allows for active participation and allows for involvement of the imagination.
I consider all of my work to be a constant self portrait; all images and textures fed by things that inspire me, places I've been, my beliefs, my desires, my questions and answers, pieces from my diaries, pictures from my past. They are a scrapbook of my memories and influences.
